EXAM notes written on a student's hand and study notes found under a desk were among the reported cases of cheating during last year's VCE exam period.

Another student was caught looking at papers in a pencil case, while one claimed that notes found on a desk had been left in a dictionary from study before the exam.

These incidents were among the 83 exam rule breaches referred by VCE exam supervisors to the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority last year.

The most serious penalties were handed down to three students who had their final subject grades reduced by two grades.

Another student lost two points from an exam score.

Many students received a reprimand. No further action was taken for minor breaches, such as taking a mobile phone into an exam but having it confiscated before the exam started.

An authority spokesman said the number of incidents was extremely small, with almost 80,000 students having completed VCE exams last year.
